Fight For ABC funding: Make Your Voice Heard
Monday, 16 February 2009

ImageAustralian performers have a proud history of campaigning for a vibrant and diverse ABC under successive governments, and with the federal budget approaching, again it’s crunch time for the ABC. Be sure to write to your local parliamentarian and encourage them to honour the Government’s election commitment to increase ABC funding. Click Read more for some suggested points to make in your letter.

  1.    ABC Adult Drama - The Federal Government must increase funding to allow ABC 1 to broadcast no less than the required levels of drama on the commercial networks (that is 55 per cent between the hours of 6am and midnight).
2.    ABC Children’s Drama - ABC 1 must be able to provide no less than the children’s drama required by the commercial networks.

3.   Australians Want it - In a Newspoll commissioned by the Alliance, a large majority of respondents said they wanted more funding for Australian TV programs. More than 65 per cent want better funding for more children's programs, 64 per cent want more drama and 79 per cent more documentaries. The Alliance-commissioned Newspoll also found that Australians want the federal government to increase funding for the ABC to allow it to broadcast more local TV programs in favour of overseas content

4.  Digital Content - The ABC must increase funding for digital content, specifically programs that are created for the internet.
T

ell your local MP, the Treasurer Wayne Swan, the Communications Minister Stephen Conroy and the Minister for the Arts Peter Garrett how you feel. Every letter and email helps. Let them know why the ABC is important to you as a performer, perhaps as a parent and as a consumer of public broadcasting.
