A majority of Edge Cinema employees are now Alliance members and we are starting to make progress on protecting workplace and award entitlements that weren’t possible before they were union members. NBL player contracts

C&E SectionThe recent termination of NBL Player Ayinde Ubaka’s contract by Melbourne Tigers has ignited deep concern and frustration amongst all NBL players. While the NBL Players Association has referred Ayinde to our employment lawyers to pursue this matter we are working to raise our concerns about the action taken by Melbourne Tigers management and to highlight our expectation that no such termination will be taken in the future against our members.

NBL referees endorse new deal

C&E SectionNinety per cent of NBL referees have voted in favour of a new three year agreement and will provide certainty about referee wages, improved allowances and a renegotiated process for NBL Life Membership for long term and valued NBL referees. Now the agreement has been endorsed by Alliance members it will be registered with Fair Work Australia.

Palace Cinema

C&E SectionIndependent cinema chain Palace Cinemas has announced it will open a six-screen cinema complex in Double Bay in 2012-13, within a new development at the former Stamford Plaza Hotel site. It’s the third new complex planned to open over the next 18 months alongside the Green Square Town Centre development, south of Sydney CBD, and the Canberra-based Palace Electric Cinema. Village Cinemas

Did you get your pay rise in July? When we negotiated your collective agreement in 2009, a pay rise for July 2011 was included in the deal. This pay rise is tied to Fair Work Australia’s minimum wages decision. Find a table here that sets out the new pay rates: Village Cinema 2011 pay rates.

Greater Union Talks Progress

ImageGreater Union cinemas improved their pay offer during recent negotiations from 8 per cent over 3 years (3%, 2%, 2.5%) to 9 per cent (3.5%, 2.5%,3%). The company is seeking a number of changes to the current collective agreement including; public holiday rates for working on Dec 25, Jan 1 and Jan 26 instead of a day off in lieu, amended Gold Class position descriptions, and a requirement for prompt claims for the payment of double time for meals breaks after 5 hours work.
