SPAA Rips Up Commercials Agreement

The Alliance is shocked by the decision made by Screen Producers Association of Australia (SPAA) this week to unilaterally terminate the SPAA/MEAA Commercials Offshore Agreement effective from 7 August 2009 without any consultation. The Alliance will be consulting with performers over the next two weeks as to how they wish to respond to this attack on their rights. The Agreement between the SPAA and the Alliance sets the minimum terms and conditions, and broadcast and other rights for artists working on television and theatrical commercials produced in Australia – predominantly for use by overseas advertisers.

Increased Funding For Sydney Theatre Company

The Alliance has welcomed the delivery of an additional $4 million for the Sydney Theatre Company including $2.1 million over three years for the continuation of the STC’s actors’ ensemble program.

Equity met with the producers of new ABC children’s TV show My Place in Sydney this week to negotiate a draft agreement for the production of online content for the show’s website. This will be in line with other recent webisodes agreements negotiated by Equity.

 
Mao Signs Deal

The producers of feature film Mao’s Last Dancer have finally signed the agreement that outlines performers’ pay and conditions, which was reached more than a year ago. Equity thanks those members who refused to participate in any further work on the film until this matter was resolved.

Equity met with the federal attorney-general last week to discuss the delay in finalising the negotiation of an international copyright treaty to protect the work of Australian performers. We have called on the Government to introduce legislation if the treaty, which has been in discussion for three years, is not implemented in the near future. Our discussions with the attorney-general continue.
