A Vote For Equity's Future
Wednesday, 20 July 2005
In an overwhelming response, 90 percent of members have voted in favour of proposed plans to secure Equity's future income by charging union dues for all residuals Equity collects and distributes. "This was a difficult decision to take. But it is a great result for Equity when so many take the time to consider issues that will have such an impact on our future as performers, by exercising our right to have a say," said Equity president Simon Burke.

The Residuals Ballot
Tuesday, 12 July 2005
All financial Equity members should have received the new ballot on the issue of union dues and residuals last week. We ask you to consider the issue and the recommendation of the National Performers Committee to vote YES. We want to make sure everyone gets to have a say so please return your ballot to our auditors by the self-addressed envelope by Thursday 14 July. If you are a financial member and have not received the form please contact the Alliance Membership Centre immediately on 1300 65 65 13.

Caught Out
Tuesday, 17 May 2005
The Alliance in Queensland caught wind of The Sunday Mail and McCann Erickson's plans to engage News Limited employees in an advertising campaign without paying for their performances. Responding to an Alliance emergency bulletin, Equity members called the newspaper and advertising agency and registered their disgust. The companies were forced to back down and will now use paid performers sourced through an agency.

Commission Not For Negotiation
Tuesday, 17 May 2005
All performers are advised to check the amount of commission being charged by their agent.  Unless you have signed a management contract your agent can only charge 10%.  We have recently had a number of members charged 20% in addition to dubious fees and taxes. If you have any queries or think you may have been short changed call Raph Kennedy on 07 3846 0143 in QLD or Simon Whipp on 02 9333 0999 in NSW.

Offshore Commercials Agreement 2005
Tuesday, 10 May 2005
Equity members will recall that late in 2004 the Screen Producers Association of Australia (SPAA) terminated the Offshore Commercials Agreement 2003, seeking to engage performers under the terms of an agreement promulgated by SPAA. This arrangement would have cut Equity members’ rates of pay significantly. The Alliance has now finalised negotiations with SPAA for a new agreement covering all performers employed in all offshore commercials. The new agreement will apply from 12 December 2004 to 30 June 2006. Performers are currently working under an interim agreement endorsed by the National Performers’ Committee. Members will be asked to vote on the draft agreement shortly, download a copy of the final draft here.
