Petition For Increased ABC Funding A Runaway Hit |

Australians have been adding their names at a rate of one signature every five seconds to a petition seeking increased funding for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The petition will be presented to federal Cabinet next week ahead of a Budget Committee meeting that will consider the next triennial funding allotment for the national public broadcaster. Some 20,000 signatures were added in the first 24 hours after the petition went online. The petition is still gathering signatures at an astonishing rate. |

27th Tasmanian Media Awards - Call For Entries |

Entries are now open for the 27th Tasmanian Media Awards, recognising
and celebrating excellence in local reporting. This year there are
seventeen awards including the highest accolade - the Keith Welsh Award
for the outstanding contribution to journalism. The 2005 awards will be
presented at a gala Media Ball in Hobart on 6 May 2006. Entries close
5pm Monday 10 April. The entry form and full list of categories are

Our ABC Deserves More Than Advertising |

The federal government’s suggestion to introduce advertising on the ABC is a bandaid funding solution that compromises the integrity and independence of our national broadcaster. A recent review, commissioned by the federal government, into the adequacy and efficient use of ABC funding has found that the national broadcaster is efficient in the distribution of current funding but is in serious need of more. |

Media Reform - A Lost Opportunity |

The Howard Government’s proposed new media regime is a lost opportunity to take up the real challenges confronting the media and entertainment industries in Australia. Having spent months creating the discussion document, the paper released today does not address these future challenges and will significantly reduce diversity in Australia. The Government’s discussion paper, Meeting the Digital Challenge: Reforming Australia's media in the digital age, talks about providing “a richer and more media diverse environment” but it does not deliver on that promise. |

Bad Air Creates Health Issues At Pacific Magazines |

Results from an occupational health and safety (OHS) survey released this week indicate that over 84 per cent of employees at Pacific Magazines believe their health has deteriorated due to poor air quality in the office. Respondents in the Alliance survey complained of regularly experiencing tightness in the chest (76.7%), dizziness (73.33%) and nausea (73.33%). |
