Fairfax Members Reject Job Cuts |
|
Friday, 27 April 2007 |
|
Alliance members have strongly rejected moves by Fairfax to slash up to 35 production staff, and refute the claim it will achieve greater efficiencies. Fairfax CEO David Kirk yesterday announced between 30 and 35 designers, graphic artists and sub-editors would lose their jobs as the newly-merged publisher integrated the production facilities of the Sydney Morning Herald and Sun-Herald newspapers. One-sixth of Fairfax Sydney’s 150 sub-editorial staff will be axed. |

2007 Press Freedom Report |
|
Friday, 27 April 2007 |
|
A creeping authoritarianism has been the hallmark of the past 12 months in the Australian press. Government and the courts continue to restrict what journalists can report and where they can go, criminalising the media’s professional obligations and wielding ever-greater unchecked power. A host of prominent Australian journalists and the Alliance reflect on the slow erosion of press freedom in 2006 in Official Spin: Censorship and Control of the Australian Press. Alliance Seeks Better Protection For Whistleblowers |
|
Thursday, 29 March 2007 |
|
The Alliance has written to the Attorney General and the federal Opposition legal affairs
spokesman requesting a meeting to discuss the need for proper legislative
protection of whistleblowers, following this week’s conviction of former
customs officer Allan Kessing, whose leaked information lead to the biggest
overhaul of airport security in Australia’s
history.
“We must recognise the importance of protecting journalists’ sources and ensuring the correct balance
between matters of national and public interest,” says Alliance Federal Secretary Chris Warren. “The conviction of
Allan Kessing sounds a warning for Australian journalists about the increasing criminalisation of their daily work, and strikes at the very heart of press
freedom,” Read letter to Attorney General here... and Opposition legal affairs spokesman here...
