At last week's newsroom stop-work meeting at The West Australian newspaper, members voted 68-5 to accept company offer of 4.5% pay increase from July 1 2008, 4% next year and CPI in 2010.

A 23-year-old foreign correspondent who spent weeks working alone in the West Bank and Gaza Strip has been named Young Australian Journalist of the Year. Judges said Sophie McNeill displayed a “high level of courage and confidence” in researching and filming her story: ‘Palestine; Divided it Falls’ for SBS’s Dateline program.

Alliance Calls On WA Govt To Protect Journalist Sources

The WA Government must cease its campaign of harassment and intimidation against journalists and introduce shield laws as a matter of utmost urgency, according to the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance. The Alliance was responding to the latest jail threat to Sunday Times reporter Paul Lampathakis for refusing to reveal the source of a story that embarrassed the State Government.

Alliance EBA claims put to Fairfax

More than 500 Fairfax staff this week rejected the company’s offer which divided staff into three groups with no guaranteed pay rise for those on $100,000+ salary. Our counter claim (read more...) was presented today to the company’s representatives, Don Churchill and Lloyd Whish-Wilson.

Survey For SBS Agreement

The results of the 2008 SBS Collective Agreement survey will be used to compile a log of claims for the upcoming collective agreement negations. Fairfax Workplace Survey Results

A disturbing picture of overwork with little compensation has emerged at Fairfax Media's metropolitan newspapers and associated websites, according to results of the 2008 workplace survey. View the results here. The workplace survey was completed by 441 Fairfax staff and is the basis of draft  log of claims for the upcoming collective agreement negotiations. Negotiations with management are scheduled for Wednesday June 11 in Sydney.
